It may be awkward and slow but that tree might grow if you'd leave it on it's own finding balance again step out on the limb what if the branch breaks? what then? Honestly, inside, I'd rather not go If that's alright everything we've tried all my alibis side by side That voice may be small but it takes up so much space and wipes the smile off my face you carry the weight but I know that can't be fair I'm not a cross for you to bear Misery's a place And everyone is here I'm just having a day a month a year My time won't run it's always autumn

Homunculus 04:08
I bet it kills you slowly To fall apart like that. No magic here, Just a rabbit in a hat. Is it all you wanted? Is it all you need? I know you'd never say, But honestly: What did you lose for me? Was it only all your love? Is the quiet quite enough? That must hurt. I hope you're doing fine though. I bet your coast is clear. And I bet you love All that honey in your ear. Because I've been to that place And I know that rain. It all makes perfect sense Until I think: What could the cost have been? Was it only all your love? Is the quiet quite enough? Does it hurt? Yeah! Was it only all your love? Is the quiet not quite enough? Was it only all your love? Is the quiet quite enough? Does it hurt?

Is it difficult to think about or impossible to say Just how much you reply upon That lucky rabbits foot as you turn grey We're getting caught in all your little rituals when they don't give you peace of mind you made your bed, don't hide under it Break the mirror and we'll be just fine There's far too many ghosts They hold the keys and all the chains And you invite them to stay It's a temporary loss look what you stand to gain If it makes you feel better This is all there is. And then in the blink of an eye You won't know how and can't know when. If it makes you feel better You can wear me 'round your neck Amateur dream-catcher Let's put the ghosts to bed And sleep instead Always crowded with no one else in the room I never doubted that they haunt you No way around it: You're in the thick of it And I know it feels like nobody understands But I do. You rounded up their bones And built yourself a cage Threw the key away We're exactly who we are We're not who we've always been.

Endlings 04:43
The water runs, The seasons come, But the compass will not read true. The pathway is seldom straight, And often narrow. We could be alone. The only ones who know. You trust in me To keep all you hold close And promise you It's the best I could do Be with me. We'll find our peace Then we'll sleep for a hundred years under the roots of the apple tree Where you won't hear me. We'll never age And we'll push all the clouds away, And we'll bloom until All above is safe And when we wake: We'll find a place. I will figure this out soon, As long as there's air to breath, As long as it's just me and you. Just us two. To be the last Of a dying breed. Be my Endling. Stay So close to me And be my Endling.
5.
Silver 03:24
Know change, And know it's happening When you gilded everything We died and made you king The center of the universe At the bottom of the world We're incapable of hanging on If there's nothing left to hold Is it time to cut the cord and let me fall? Is everything I do so insurmountable? Is it time to close the door? Won't you let me know: Am I any more awful than before? 'Cause if so: Wrap me up in silver and let this go Where it always goes Wrap me up in silver Won't you let this go Where it always goes? Detach for a minute but keep a close eye on the time While I stumble in the dark For all the pieces that I'm never meant to find And I underwhelm so easily And our roles never reverse If I knew just what road brought me here Would it make this long walk worse? Tell me how you feel And I'll feel everything at once Show me what you see And I'll see Just put me down Put me in my place Cut off your nose and spite your face

Maze 03:23
Oh! Un-summitable peak Seeming always out of reach and it's just not worth my time The mountaintop You're climbing up Is far away from mine Set the smallest broken bone Let the moment be bygone Can we suture this divide? The impetus Inside me Difficult to find. Is it just me? Are we running round in circles? Mice in a maze Do you know which one of us is chasing? Is it just me? Are we pushing water uphill? Just leave it be Cause you know we're better being lonely. No divining what's to come or judging what's been done There's not another life The ideal place The ideal time But pathways misaligned Make our peace with it Why are we so scared to admit? We're lying to ourselves No push above Or pull below Is on it's way to help

Harbour 04:44
When it rains, it pours but our heads above the line and always with eyes on those little horizons Who knows where you might go or what you might find but I could be your north cause god knows you're mine There's nothing behind the sun There's nowhere beyond the sea when you're tired of breaking down just pick up your bones, and swim to me For if it all goes wrong and the world outside's so big and it's all around you you don't know what to do with it I'll be where you call "home" Though that always seemed so far but love's not a lighthouse It's a harbour There's nothing behind the sun There's nowhere beyond the sea, it's true when I'm tired of breaking down I'll just pack up my bones, and swim to you I'll just pack up my bones, and swim And I'm begging you summer come barreling into both of my eyes that dream was a nightmare holding us tightly by the hair while we're sleeping
8.
Beholder 05:10
The mantle's come to cloak us both and make us old it envelops completely So we can't hide Our fountain years have long since passed the moments gone But we drink deep from the well inside The unanswered question The failed delivery The word on your tongue's short tip It's a sin But we let it happen. Not again We follow the pattern Thought we promised? Eternal youth is overdue But at least we know We shouldn't enable What we know is wrong The road spells hurt, and this might not work But we have to try Nail our colours and nurture The side we're on What now? Plant the flower Though we may not see the bloom It's not for us, like it once was We're all ossifying But that comes slow So we beg the garden "grow!" Seek truth in the flourish And make a promise to ourselves To be virtuous, not tumultuous Enrapture all who held our hands When we learned to stand Let's make safe Our floodgates And let all the light in Take our place In beauty Become the beholder Redefine what's righteous We're not meant to squander The years we have Try to be better Instead of just "older". Become the beholder

Nevernear 04:46
I know I carved the path But I'm far too scared to go And I know that we should talk But the words stick in my throat It's always like this, Too quick to upset I'm not helping Shrinking violet We uprooted I'll admit it I guess I've always known Never been enough In love, or not Quietly distant Have we always known? We'll never find that missing piece Or come to terms with what that means. I wish you saw me in the clear Circle the square, I'm always here. But never near. My heart followed you home. We got lost along the way. A thousand breaths I'm owed. They were never yours to take. Little tiptoes. Sea of eggshells. I'll come running through to your room And never ask you: Did you always know? "Never" Have we always known? We'll never find that missing piece Or come to terms with what that means. I wish you saw me in the clear Circle the square, I'm always here. But never near.

Every Thing 05:48
What's holding you down? Is it endless endings, or always pretending that you'll be alright come the morning? It doesn't have to be true Remember there's good If you'd only look Relinquish the weight you've been holding. At the end of it all Everything's not so awful. At the rise and the fall. Our slow dance with the day light At the end of it all Every thing must go. Day by day we fall apart but tomorrow arrives, protest all you like as if the sun only rose just to spite you It's not the end of the world Although it feels like it should be But the grass will still grow above or below me I promise you. We are all that we have Sticks and stones Blood and bone and some time. We are all that we have We are all that we have And that's all Y'know At the end of it all Everything's not so awful. At the rise and the fall. Our slow dance with the day light At the end of it all: Every Thing...

about

About:

Uproot is the debut album by Pluviotrope, brainchild of Ryan Kane, the person writing this blurb in third person, because that's how these album descriptors work.

Knocking on the door of 30 years old and without any true individual artistic output, Ryan decided all the time spent dodging pandemics and the company of other people in the fear they'd breath on him might be better served trying to release something entirely conceptualized, composed and performed by himself. Everyone has that "thing" they want to do (write a book, sing on stage, learn that language, etc), and releasing an album was Ryan's. And well. This is his attempt.

Ryan has never had any formal training in the instruments on this record (Outside of one paid masterclass with the lovely Mark Guiliana when he was 27).

The album consists of songs Ryan came up with over a ten(ish) year period, some ranging back to before he dabbled in songwriting in bands (Always Autumn, Every Thing), songs that previous bands didn't get gel with (Nevernear, Beholder), and entirely new songs that arrived as part of the creative process that was compiling this work (Homunculus, Rabbit's Foot).

There's not much more to say about the work, other than to let it speak for itself. It was created purely for creations sake, and offered a unique salve during a global pandemic. It was created to prove to Ryan he could do it, which he has. It now belongs to anyone curious enough to end up here, free to all.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Credits:

Melodies & ideas were developed from around 2016 - 2021. Composed properly + lyrics written 2020 - 2021. Recorded in Ryan's tiny flat in Aberdeen 2020 - 2022.

Thanks to Arnald, Dupree and Daisy.

Ryan Kane wrote and played everything (except the drums, ironically enough, which are provided courtesy of GetGoodDrums. Ryan hand programmed every drum hit, which is far more impressive I assure you. If any one wants to pay me to go into a studio and record the drums properly, well, the album is Pay what you Want, so knock your socks off).

Ryan also produced and mixed and mastered this, which will explain a lot to any audiophiles out there. He has truly no idea how any of it works. But it sounds good to him.

Thank you to those that have followed along and encouraged me.
